PANIKKAR, GEOGRAPHY AND SEA POWER
KM Panikkar was one of India’s first geo-strategic thinkers. Drawing upon
Indian history, and writers like Alfred Thayer Mahan, he laid out a framework
for understanding the influence of geopolitics upon the political and economic
history of India and the rest of Asia. Moreover, from this reading of history he
offered insights and recommendations for Indian security. Many of his ideas
are reflected in current Indian strategic thinking, both in the government and
military. While certain aspects of his thinking on maritime strategy and sea
power are used by contemporary security analysts, there are important aspects
that are not engaged with today.
