Call for Papers for ICWA International Conference on K M Panikkar And the Growth of a Maritime Consciousness in India. Read for more details.....
K.M. Panikkar played a formative role in orienting independent India to think about the need of developing a maritime perspective. Works such as "The Strategic Problems of the Indian Ocean" (1944), "India and the Indian Ocean" (1945) and his classic "Asia and Western Dominance" (1953) amongst others may be seen as the precursors of current narratives that underline the need for equibalance in India's maritime and continental perspectives.
Panikkar's perspectives drew both on the experience of British dominance in the Indian Ocean and on the rich and long history of Indian presence across the vast expanse of these waters and beyond. Contemporary and historical perspectives on maritime activity in the Indo-Pacific region point both to India's centrality to the region and the region's importance for India.
To explore this theme further the Indian Council of World Affairs prepares to have a conference titled “K.M. Panikkar and the Growth of a Maritime Consciousness in India".The seminar will be structured around panels discussing pre-selected papers.
The conference is scheduled to be held later this/early next year. Academic scholars and policy analysts interested in presenting papers may contact Dr. Pragya Pandey, Research Fellow, ICWA at pragya.pandey[at]icwa[dot]in
